Invitations. How to accept and how to decline:)
Invitations:) The topic I wanted to write about for already a couple of years!
There are two types of invitations nowadays: UMA and real clients.
UMA
When UMA is inviting you, it's shown for a client as a bid.

So whenever you reply, write it as an answer to the job post. The client didn't invite you personally. How to understand it? You can read my disaster article.
Client + recent update
When you receive an invite from the client, you can either accept or decline it.
Make it fast, as right now Upwork made an update and your response time is visible even by hours!

Decline reason.
Finally, I can say that. There is only one reason that is acceptable. This reason is not interested in the work described. This is the only one reason that won't influence your profile and won't filter you from the future invitations.

Everything is job related
There is also a recent change on Upwork: all offers, invites, and bids are related to the job only so actually invitations always look like bids now, where you can just apply for free.

Now about accepting. There is almost no difference in between writing a bid and a response to the invitation. In both ways, we want to get the first reaction.
When the client is really sending you an invitation, your reply will land in his message room. So the difference is - you'll be able to follow him up.
