How JSS is calculated on Upwork. Simplified explanation

Usually, I am asked to explain, why JSS went low. So I wanted to make an article to make it clear.

Rules:

At a high level, the JSS is determined using the following formula

(Successful contract outcomes − Negative contract outcomes) / Total contract outcomes

MONTHS

The count 6,12,24 months JSS and give you the best.

So for example, 23 months ago you had a very bad contract and after that - only 5 stars. Your JSS will be 100%

Another example: 7 months ago you had 1 star contract and then only great 5 stars - your JSS will be 100%

Another example: in the last 6 months you had only one 1$ contract but 1 star, before you had many 5 stars, your JSS won't be 0, it will be like 98% and maybe even 100% (as influence during last 24 months is minimal)

Private feedbacks.

Private feedback lower than 7 points will be counted as a poor feedback.
Your 5 stars contract will make your JSS lower if the private feedback was poor.

Even if your client will agree to change the contract fedback, they can't change a private feedback.

Small earnings VS high earnings

More earnings mean that your job will influent more

Why I closed a great contract for 5 stars but my JSS remains the same? 90 days rule.

Because this contract was already counted when it reached 90 days. When you closed it with a good feedback, just nothing changed.

Long-term jobs

Do you have only one job but it's long term? Approximately in 360 days you will get a JSS because it will be considered as 4 jobs from the same client

Not eligible contracts

• 24 months + contracts
• no earnings and no feedback (importnat because if no earnings and poor feedback then will negatively influent)
• no feedback
• client violated Upwork's policies
• previously flagged clients by another freelancers
• suspended clients
